Sakic There are just some good guys in sports that no one can really hold anything against. People like Spudd Webb, Gilchrist, Maldini, Javier Zanetti, etc.

Enter the good guy of Ice Hockey, Joe Sakic. While people go absolutely crap their pants at the thought of Wayne Gretsky, I think it is important to realize that there hasn’t been a nicer guy on the ice that has achieved as much as Joe has over the course of a 20 year career that has seen him at the same franchise his entire career.

I got a chance to see Joe Sakic play live some 60 feet away from me at the United Center in Chicago a few years ago and remember that he came on the ice sometime in the second period while Chicago was up 2 goals to nothing. I was excited to see him play live. Anyone that ever played a Hockey Video game in their LIVES knew whom he was and the influence he had on the ice reminds me of whenever I saw Mario L march on for the Penguins.

Joe, had the young Chicago Blackhawks team unsettled with his trademark wrist shot just four minutes into taking the ice. Always the first guy to diffuse tension on the ice, I don’t ever remember seeing him get into a full on fight. He’s a great example of what it means to become Captain of a team and behave responsibly. Calm under pressure, the Avalanche will have a hard time replacing him but after 20 years of loyal service, they should have seen this coming. Consistent, Calm, Clinical and Gifted. Four words that cover what Joe Sakic brought to the game.

Joe,

I’d like to wish you the very best of luck in your personal life after Hockey. In a league full of punks and frustrated just turned 21’s, you added the last bit of class that remains in the legaue untill Nickoli Habibullan closes the locker door on his goalie mask. A great ambasador for the game and one of the few good guys in sport, your legacy will be great.

Best of Luck from us at the Offside Trap.
