So Xabi Alonso has handed in a transfer request at Liverpool, according to reports, and there’s only one place he could be headed.

It seems my perpetual question of Real Madrid Galacticos II FC Pvt Ltd – “but who will defend” – has been answered.

Damn.

Well alright, let’s be realistic here. The backline now has Metzelder and Pepe in the centre, Sergio Ramos on the right and Marcelo on the left . . . so the wing backs are basically rubbish defenders but good going forward, and atleast one of the centre-halves has a propensity towards going batshit insane during a match (I’ll give you a hint, it’s not ze German).

Robben and Ronaldo will line up on the two flanks in midfield, with Xabi in the centre holding and probably either Lassana Diarra, Mohammadou Diarra or Gago partnering him, because, let’s face it,  he’s going to need the help, and he enjoys bombing forward from time to time himself. Leaving Benzema and Higuain up front? No, it would never work, as a 4-4-2. They’d have to play 4-3-3, with Xabi, a Diarra and Higuain (playing behind the forwards) in the midfield, and Benzema, Robben and Ronaldo up front. But I see gaps with that, so let’s see how it works out. Robben and Ronaldo will almost never track back, remember, and, as we have just noted, the wingbacks are not very good at the ‘back’ part of their jobs.

They won a recent Peace Cup match against Liga de Quito, a decent Ecuadorian side, 4-2, btw, so the leaking has already begun.
